A Better Direction

Coming off of his debut single as a solo artist in December, Louis Tomlinson has released a brand new music video for his new track, “Back to You”, (not to be confused with “Back for You”) featuring Bebe Rexha. Back in December Louis debut single “Just Hold On” came out three days after his mother, Johannah Deakin, lost her battle to leukemia. Louis had already scheduled to debut his single with Steve Aoki on The X Factor UK on December 10th, and it is rumored that in Louis final moments with his mother, she urged him to do the performance. While the performance of an upbeat, Steve Aoki track was not what many people were expecting, and could've come off as a distasteful way to promote a song, the single immediately began to chart in support of Louis losing his mother. Unsurprisingly after the release and short lived success of the single, Louis retreated into hiding which is no doubt something he’s mastered after being in the world’s biggest boy band for five years. While pop radio might have forgotten about him, fans have been eagerly waiting for the release of new material from Louis. Unfortunately “Back to You” still isn’t a completely solo track which was something I was really expecting and looking forward to from him, but it is quite a catchy single with a strong chorus.

The music video, to put shortly, is Louis. From the location, his hometown of Doncaster, to the athleisure apparel, he has obviously taken full advantage of having complete creative control over his career, which perhaps is a nice way of trying to launch your solo career when you weren’t the most popular guy in the group outside of the fanbase. I can tell Louis is trying to be as original as possible in the video by just walking around town hanging out with his friends and playing soccer, and don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it just because I already knew that’s where he’s from, but I feel like other viewers who don’t have background knowledge of Louis might be a little confused or intrigued, which is the point I guess. Moving onto Bebe Rexha, also known as the UK’s wannabe Kylie Jenner, who was an...interesting choice for a collaboration. Personally I had never heard of her until this song, so good for her. The music video itself wasn’t anything extraordinary, most music videos aren’t these days, but I did personally enjoy seeing Louis do something that is so Louis. There is no story or acting in the video to make sense with the song, just Louis and Bebe wandering around Doncaster singing about how they can’t escape each other, only to end up side by side in the end. Overall, an entertaining music video for fans of Louis, but kind of a pointless waste of time otherwise. One thing we can all agree on is that Louis quiff is back and better than ever, and so is his relationship with old flame, Eleanor Calder whom I suspect he can’t stop coming back to.
